InterRail Booking Conditions

InterRail Pass Product Terms and Conditions

1. General description of the product

The indication 'InterRail Pass' is used for the total range of passes, consisting of the 2 main categories:

  • InterRail Global Pass - See 3.1
  • InterRail One Country Pass - See 3.2

The InterRail Pass is a pass which, depending on the category and validity chosen, gives the customer the right to travel anywhere on the lines of the companies for which his/her pass is valid during a defined period.

InterRail Passes also entitle the holder to Bonuses on the lines of some additional companies and non-transportation organisations. Bonuses are defined as special prices, reductions or free passage with specific participating transport companies or non-transport companies in certain specified countries. A full list can be found on Terms and Conditions

All InterRail Passes, with the exception of the "continuous" InterRail Global Passes, are "flexi" passes, which entitle the holder to a specified number of days of travel within a fixed overall period. The continuous pass entitles the holder to travel daily within the period of validity of the pass.

Passes may be purchased a maximum of three months before the first day of validity.

This includes residents of the following countries that are not included in the InterRail offer itself: Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Cyprus, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Russia, San Marino, Ukraine and Vatican City.

If a resident of a country other than those mentioned above has been staying in Europe for longer than 6 months (i.e. proven by a holiday visa for staying longer than 6 months in a European country) he/she is to be treated as "permanently living in Europe", thus entitled to buying an InterRail Pass.

At the moment of purchase, the traveller is obliged to give proof of his/her country of residence and date of birth by means of an identity card, passport or residence permit. In case of purchase via the Internet or a third party, the traveller must be able to give proof of the correctness of this data at the time of ticket inspection on board the train.

"Flexi" Passes:

All InterRail Passes with the exception of the continuous InterRail Global Pass, are so-called flexi passes.
Holders of a flexi pass may choose the days of travel at their own convenience within the overall validity of the pass. The pass-holder must enter the date of each travel day into the travel calendar of the pass before boarding the first train/ship of that day. This date must be entered by the traveller in blue or black ink or with a blue or black pen in the corresponding box on the calendar. Dates must be inserted in sequential order in the following manner, for example: May 27 = 27/0.5

Pass-holders can travel from midnight until midnight on the chosen day of travel. If the trip starts with a direct overnight train departing after 19h00 (7pm), the next day’s date must be entered; travel between 19h00 and 24h00 (7pm and midnight) on the day of departure is then included. When using an overnight ferry covered by the Pass, the holder may either enter the date of departure or the date of arrival.
However travel can never begin before 00:00 hours on the first day of the overall validity of the pass and must be completed by midnight of the last day of validity.

5. Categories of travellers and class of travel

All InterRail Passes are available in 1st and Standard class for adults/children and in Standard class only for 'Youth' travellers. The 'Child fare' applies to children aged 4 up to and including 11 years of age on the first day of validity of the pass. 'Youth' travellers are those travellers aged 12 up to and including 25 years of age on the first day of validity of the pass.

InterRail Passes are valid in the class indicated on the pass. A 1st class InterRail Pass is also valid for travel in 2nd class. If a holder of an InterRail Pass marked 2nd class wants to travel in a higher class, he/she must pay the difference between the price of a 1st class ticket and that of a 2nd class ticket at the full fare for the journey concerned.

6. Travel in country of residence

An InterRail Global Pass does not entitle its holder to free travel in his country of residence if this country is included in the validity area of the pass.

7. Special train surcharges

Special rules/tariffs may apply for specific trains. The holder must pay charges and supplements, in particular, those levied for:

  • (compulsory) seat reservations (sometimes including services routinely offered and/or compulsory)
  • the use of global price trains with compulsory reservation. Global priced trains are trains where the cost of the reservation is included within the overall price of the ticket. Some examples include Thalys, TGV Lyria, Elipsos and Eurostar trains
  • the use of sleeping accommodation (couchettes, beds and sleeperettes)
  • the use of cabins, berths and reclining seats on ships of the shipping companies
  • Season supplements during the months June to September on the shipping lines Superfast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries between Italy and Greece
  • port taxes
  • meals, which are included in the supplement of some trains
  • other services offered on board trains (telephone, newspapers etc.)

8. Use of bonuses

Bonuses are defined as special prices, reductions or free passage with specific participating transport companies or non-transport companies in certain specified countries.
A bonus can only be obtained:

  • on presentation of a valid InterRail pass
  • within the overall validity of a pass
  • if the InterRail Pass is valid in the country in which the bonus is granted
  • generally only from the local ticket office, call-centre or website of the company granting the bonus

There are two kinds of bonuses:

  • Those entitling to free passage/entrance
  • Those granting a reduction in price/fare

For holders of an InterRail Pass with flexible validity the use of a free travel bonus can only occur on a day on which the date has been filled in on the pass.

Please note that the use of a reduction does not require the use of a travel day of a ‘flexi’ pass.

Limitation and liability

For travel by Eurostar or any other carrier, the relevant carrier's conditions of carriage and bylaws apply.

All conditions of carriage / bylaws contain limitations of liability, which are incorporated herein and you are advised to obtain copies of these and read them before travelling.

REL limits its liability for the theft, loss or damage to any luggage to a maximum of £20 per claim (‘luggage' includes all personal effects).

Subject to clause 2.4 above, REL accepts no liability for any cancellation of or delay to your journey or any loss or damage whatever the reason.

Save as otherwise set out and save for death or personal injury due to the negligence of REL (for which there is no limitation of liability), REL restricts its liability for failure or non-performance of the Contract to a sum equivalent to the price of the service not provided.

In no circumstances will REL accept liability for loss of business, loss of revenue, loss of profit or any other consequential or indirect loss.

Application for compensation for alleged failure or non-performance of the Contract must be submitted in writing to REL within 28 days of the date of travel. You must obtain a suitable endorsement of the ticket when on the services of SNCF by an SNCF official, either on-board the train or at the destination station or, when using the services of any other carrier from an appropriate official on that service and enclose this with your application.

4. Boarding Times

You must comply with check-in and boarding times and failure to do so may invalidate your ticket.

5. Insurance

REL strongly recommends that you take out appropriate insurance cover (including Winter Sports cover) so that you may benefit from cancellation cover and protection against those risks for which REL does not accept liability under these terms and conditions.

6. General

Snow Train tickets will be sent by first class post unless otherwise requested. A £5 fee will be charged for requests for tickets to be sent by Special Delivery. All tickets booked within 7 days of departure will be subject to a £5 special delivery fee, where tickets on departure cannot be arranged.

If your ticket is spoiled or tampered with, it is invalid for travel.

Lost or mislaid tickets will not be replaced nor will refunds be made in respect of them except at REL's sole discretion.

You agree not to act in a manner likely to endanger any person or property and to obey all reasonable directions given by REL or its servants or agents for the purpose of ensuring the safety, efficiency or regularity of any trains.

REL reserves the right to refuse any person access to/ask them to leave any train or platform if they are behaving or, in REL's sole opinion are likely to behave in a riotous, disorderly or offensive manner.

You may only travel in your allocated seat and accommodation.

In the event that the Snow Train service becomes non-operational or is delayed or suspended for any reason whatsoever so that carriage is not in REL's sole opinion, possible or is not likely to be possible at or within a reasonable time of the booked travel time, then REL shall be entitled to refuse travel and in such circumstances you will be entitled to a refund of the fare paid. Alternatively, you may at your option, but subject to availability, cancel and re-book your travel on a different time but on the same tariff band. The taking of any of the above steps shall be in full settlement of any claim against REL in respect of non-travel.

You must comply with all customs regulations and bylaws enforced from time to time by, and with all the regulations of, any competent authorities regarding passengers, luggage or other property. In particular (but without limitation), you must carry all requisite documents, passports and visas.

You will comply with such checks, inspections and searches as may be required of you by either REL (its servants or agents) or any competent authorities as the same may be considered necessary or desirable for the safe and/or secure and/or efficient and regular operation of the service.

You fail to comply with such requirements entirely at your own risk and REL accepts no liability for the consequence of your failure to comply with the regulations.

Without prejudice to any other provisions in these conditions, non-compliance with any of the requirements set out in this clause 6 shall be a ground for refusing travel and no refund of your fare will be made.

No hazardous goods (such as loaded firearms, explosives, toxic, radioactive or infectious goods) livestock, animals or pets will be accepted for carriage.

If you leave any property on a train REL will not be responsible for any loss, damage or delay resulting from the loss of that article.

If luggage is left on a train REL may open it and examine the contents before removing to a secure place. REL may without liability remove or destroy any luggage or its contents and any other property which might in its opinion cause injury or inconvenience to persons or damage to property.

Any left property not claimed within 3 months of it being found will be considered abandoned and then may be sold or otherwise disposed of and the proceeds retained by REL. Perishable goods will be disposed of earlier.

REL may charge for the return of any lost or unclaimed property.
