Spanish and Portuguese trains – what types are there?

The rail network covering Spain and Portugal operates a number of train types providing comprehensive coverage across the Iberian Peninsula:

Elipsos

Start your city break the civilised way when you take the Elipsos train-hotel - just board in Paris and wake up in the centre of Barcelona or Madrid. Designed for ease and comfort, with a restaurant serving choice Mediterranean cuisine and hand-picked French and Spanish wine, the train-hotel really is a hotel on wheels.

Choose from reclining seats, four-bed couchette compartments, Club Class one or two-bed cabins, or Gran Class one or two-bed cabins, complete with shower, toilet and washbasins. A welcome drink, an à la carte dinner and a continental breakfast is included in the Gran Class fare.

The train also runs from Milan or Turin to Barcelona and from Zurich or Bern to Barcelona.

Elipsos services stop at other smaller destinations en route to the major cities.

AVE trains

Get from Madrid to Seville in just two hours and 30 minutes on the AVE train.

These high-speed trains also connect with the Talgo 200 route at Cordoba to go to Malaga and offer good links with local trains to smaller destinations. Choose between Club, Preferente and Tourist classes. Travel Club class and enjoy the AVE lounge and its Internet access before you board, as well as an à la carte meal at your seat on the train.

You can book tickets for AVE trains 60 days before you want to travel.

Talgo 200

Take the Talgo 200 from Madrid to Malaga, or join it from the AVE train at Cordoba. You’ll enjoy access to the AVE lounge and a meal at your seat if you travel Preferente class. Both Preferente and Tourist classes include a children's play area and a bar-buffet car.

Lusitania trains to Lisbon

Try the Lusitania train-hotel which runs overnight from Madrid to Lisbon. Similar to the Elipsos, accommodation ranges from reclining seats to Gran Class cabins which include a washbasin, shower and toilet in the cabin, as well as dinner in the restaurant car. You can also book Preferente cabins and four-berth Tourist-class cabins.
