Italian trains - what types are there?

The Italian rail network is served by a range of trains, known for being clean, on-time and well-equipped:

Artesia day trains

Join the high speed Artesia day train at Paris, Lyon or Chambéry and take it to Milan via Modane, Turin and Bardonecchia. Making local and regional connections is easy when you arrive in the heart of each city.

Artesia night trains

Book a sleeping car (1, 2 or 3 berth with washing facilities) or a couchette compartment (4 or 6 berth) and let the night train gently whisk you from Paris or Dijon to Turin, Milan, Verona, Venice, Parma, Bologna, Florence or Rome. Accommodation is air-conditioned and includes washing facilities. There's a restaurant car on the Stendhal service to Venice and Verona, and a bar-buffet car on the Palatino service to Rome.

Eurostar Italia

Enjoy a comfortable, high speed journey when you travel between Italy's major cities on Eurostar Italia. This regular, reliable InterCity service has good links with regional and local trains and offers a welcome snack and drink for passengers in first-class.

Riviera trains

Experience the romance of the Italian-French Riviera when you take the overnight train from Naples, Rome, Venice or Milan to Monte Carlo or Nice. Accommodation includes reclining seats, couchette compartments and sleeper cabins. The train also links to Basel in Switzerland.

Local trains

Enjoy some of the most picturesque journeys when you take local trains in Italy. The Circumvesuviana, for example, runs from Naples to Sorrento, passing some beautiful coastline and giving fantastic views of Mount Vesuvius.

Local trains link up with major routes to take passengers to smaller destinations. You often don't need to book ahead - just go to the station and buy a ticket. You can also book tickets for many Italian local trains through Rail Europe.
