Rail Europe today launches a carbon comparison tool on
www.raileurope.co.uk, allowing environmentally conscious travellers to compare the impact travelling by train, car and plane has on the environment.
Today’s travellers are becoming more and more savvy when it comes to choosing how to get away from it all. With it’s easy to read figures and graphs, Rail Europe’s new tool provides a quick and easy reference point.
The figures really speak for themselves in illustrating just how damaging air travel can be for the environment.
For example, a journey from London to Strasbourg emits just 10.13 kg of carbon per passenger, compared with 105.65 kg for the equivalent plane journey. That’s 90% less carbon if you take the train. And with journey times from London to Strasbourg from around 5 hours, the train easily competes on door-to-door travel times with the plane.
For skiers keen to do their bit to protect their winter playgrounds from the effects of global warming, the train again comes out on top in the green stakes. A journey from London to Les Arcs by train emits just 12.78 kg of carbon, while the equivalent journey by plane emits more than ten times that amount.
