SprInterRail - a massive success
We’re now back from our whirlwind 'SprInterRail' sporting adventure: 11 days, 1991 miles… by train!
We've cycled La Loire à Velo, Nantes, sailed on Lake Bourget in Aix Les Bains, saddled up and went horse-riding in the hills above Lake Garda, and swam in a natural lake and hiked to the waterfalls in the mountains around Interlaken.
We filmed the trip, provided daily updates on facebook and twitter (hashtag #SprInterRail) and updated a rolling blog with images of each sporting activity and where we eat, drink and sleep on the mobilytrip website.
Highlights for me were getting up close to the incredible mechanical elephants at Nantes – they’re 12m high and take up to 49 passengers - they really have to be seen to be believed… so check out the video. The best food was in Italy (no surprise there), at the horse-riding school Scuderia Castello, where the owner Giavanni treated us to a fantastic spread of local cheeses, cured meat, washed down with some local rose wine, and then his own tasty Grappa.
Taking to the healthy waters of the spa at Aix Les Bains was a great way to relax after the sailing lesson on Lake Bourget, but the best water experience was the infinity pool at Lefay Hotel overlooking Lake Garda… and the huge juicer at breakfast – it’s the first hotel I’ve ever been to where you can juice your own fruit and veg at breakfast. And finally, the stand out natural attraction was the waterfall at Geissbach. The huge snowfall this winter has meant that the snowmelt this Spring has been much greater than usual, and the waterfall was raging… it was an awesome sight.
The trip was really a celebration of the diversity of Europe – and hopefully we showed how easy it is to travel between these fabulous destinations by train. InterRail is a great way to go, it allows you the flexibility to travel when you like, and now that we’re plugged into Europe’s high speed network, it’s easier than ever to travel across the continent by train. I highly recommend it… it you haven't yet tried it, give it a go!
