Venice Lido © Maria Schnitzmeier Need another reason to visit Venice this summer? Venice Lido, once the exclusive preserve of multi-millionaires and Hollywood movie stars, is set to be opened up to the public.

As Nick Squires explains in this fascinating article in The Telegraph, wooden cabins on the seven-mile long stretch of sand fetch up to £12,000 a season in rent, making the Lido one of Europe’s most exclusive beach resorts. It’s also the scene of the glamorous film festival every September.

Swanky hotels and apartment blocks like the palatial Hotel Des Bains have been ordered by the new mayor to make sure their private beaches extend to within no more than 15ft of the sea. That leaves plenty of room for us mere mortals to access the water this summer.

Travelling to Venice by rail is easy, too. Head to Paris then pick up an Artesia Night sleeper service rolling into the centre of Venice with a full day’s sightseeing – or sunbathing – ahead of you. Return tickets start at just £135 from London. Find out more in our Venice destination guide.

Re: Destination ideas: Venice Lido opens up to the public

You mentioned the night train from Paris to Venice. I would travel on this service if i was assured that something can be done about the absent night porters on the train who allowed me to be robbed in my sleep of all my money on a trip last winter. The guard did not appear until morning, although i looked everywhere for him after I discovered I was robbed. I pointed out the person i knew was responsible but he covered up for him and winked at him...he was in the bunk above me and had been going to and fro all night putting things in his bag and smoking in the toilet. ..they were obviously working in unison. Nothing was done and it ruined my entire holiday. I reported it to the police but they did nothing.

Hi Ingrid. I'm really sorry to hear that you didn't have a good experience on your trip. We haven't been notified by any other customers of security problems on this route, so hopefully it was an isolated incident. We will pass on your comments to Artesia.
