Top 5 attractions in Stockholm

A. Gamla Stan
Stockholm was founded within the narrow alleyways of Gamla Stan way back in 1252, and it remains one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centres. Its narrow, pedestrianised streets are perfect for whiling away a few hours browsing the arty boutiques and cosy café bars clustered around Västerlånggatan, the main route through the island.

B. Stockholm archipelago
The spectacular Skärgården stretches some 90 miles (140km) from north to south and is made up of a startling 24,000 islands, 150 of which are inhabited. Well-heeled Stockholmers head for their summerhouses in the warmer months, but it’s well worth a trip to see these fantastically diverse islands whatever the time of year.

C. Vasa Museum
The Vana’s the most visited museum in Scandinavia, and when you clap eyes on the magnificent sight of the largest and best preserved ship of its kind in the world you’ll understand why. Built back in the 1620s when Sweden was at war with Poland, the top heavy ship only sailed 1300m before toppling over due to the weight of its fearsome armoury.

D. City Hall
With its impressive spire topped with three golden crowns, City Hall is perhaps the most famous sight in Stockholm. It’s also home to Stockholm’s mayor and city administration. A guided tour is a must, taking in the magnificence of the Blue Hall and the Golden Hall – home to the annual Nobel Banquet. In the summer you can climb the tower for spectacular views of the city.

E. Skogskyrkogården
Created by two young Swedish architects in 1917 following a competition to design a new graveyard in the city, Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetary) is famed for seamlessly blending into the stunning Swedish countryside and being home to dozens of works by famous Swedish artists. Among the some 100,000 graves is the final resting place of film star Greta Garbo.
