Top 5 attractions in Prague

A. Wenceslas Square
Václavské Námestí may have its roots in the 14th century, but it’s very much the vibrant centre of modern-day Prague. The stunning neoclassical Czech National Museum overlooks the square while several grand statues, including the Saint Wenceslas Monument, watch over the throngs of passing tourists. The square was the setting for massive demonstrations during the 1989 revolution.

B. The Jewish Quarter
A ticket to Prague’s Jewish museum covers entry to all the main historical sites in the Jewish Quarter. This includes four splendid synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Robert Guttman Gallery. It’s a poignant and moving record of a people that was almost completely eliminated from the Czech capital by the Nazis during World War II.

C. Charles Bridge
Charles Bridge, or Karluv Most, has connected Prague Castle with the historic Old Town since the 15th century. A miracle of medieval engineering, the bridge is over 500 metres long and decorated with some stunning religious statues. Legend has it that the secret of its longevity is the builders’ bizarre decision to mix some eggs into the mortar.

D. Old Town Square
Another favourite with the tourists is Staromìstské Námestí, just a short walk from Wenceslas Square. The square is surrounded on all sides by some extraordinary buildings, including the town hall and Tyn Cathedral. Be sure to stop by on the stroke of the hour, when the Astronomical Clock’s four figures of Greed, Vanity, Death and the Turk dish out a lesson in medieval morality.

E. Prague Castle
Dating back to the 9th century, Pražský Hrad is a mish-mash of architectural styles whose Gothic spires dominate the city skyline. Once home to Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emporers, it’s one of the largest castles in the world and the jewel in the crown of the surrounding Hradčany neighbourhood. The complex also boasts museums, restaurants and regular cultural events such as the successful Jazz at the Castle.
